The Department conducts research on global and regional peace and security issues, with a focus on the international security landscape, arms control and disarmament, global and regional hotspots, conflict prevention and crisis management, counter-terrorism, transnational crime, maritime security, and emerging technologies and security.

The Department is also responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Center for Global Security Initiative Studies.
